NODO conducted construction of flood control gabion basket on 15th and 21st, 2021) of the BRAC project, 80 gabions basket at Cell-Dahir to mitigate the adverse impact of flooding and soil erosion. The project coordinated with all stakeholder to ensure participation and ownership of the project. This construction was intended at reducing the velocity of water that is often associated with floods and save on soil erosion and damage of critical infrastructure.
The farms that were heavily impacted by floods were now safe and could support active agricultural production\
The project however noted the following (important for subsequent programming)
- Small stones for filling the gabion baskets were a bit tough to find in Ceel Dahir village—increasing the cost of materials significantly because they had to be sourced from somewhere else.
- There were more flood sites requiring gabions though we couldn’t fill all. The project has therefore made some stride in mitigating the impact of the floods but much more need to be done to cover the other areas that also need gabions.
