NODO conducted Community mobilization and inception meetings at the community , regional and national level to kick-start the project

The NODO organization conducted consultative workshops with key stakeholder in Cell-Dahir and Laag to set stage of start of project activities. Through this exercises, NODO was able to gain the good will of project stakeholders and roll out the pre-implementation assessments that would generate evidence on baselines critical to adaptation of the project to the immediate needs and vulnerabilities of farmers and the communities in general. These workshops and familiarization sessions were conducted in April 2021 with strict adherence to the public odder guidelines set out to contain the spread of covid-19.

NODO organization conducted farmer vulnerability assessment in Cell-Dahir and Laag; and a flood rapid assessment in Cell-Dahir.

The assessments highlighted the following (which were very critical to design for implementation):

•             Lacking/deficiency in farming equipment and machines which will help farmers produce good quantity and quality produce.

•             Limited access to quality seeds, focal point person for agriculture and motivation so that they increase quality and quantity of produce.

•             Low capacity on to facilitates adoption of modern farming activities that ensures good quantity and quality produce.

•             Lack of capital to expand and improve farming activities.

•             Broken routes to market for farm produce limiting returns on sale of produce.

•             No cooperatives and/or collectives that can champion for farmer rights in terms of access to inputs and fetch of responsive prices in markets.

The post floods rapid assessments which was carried out in May 2021, also gave insights ion current statuses and priority needs that would benefit from the response.

Critical infrastructure supporting water supply were destroyed in the floods; with direct consequences on the livelihoods on the farmers in Cell-Dahir.

It was necessary that programming response targeted:

•             Adopt early warning systems that would mitigate on losses associated with flooding;

•             Urgently support farmers in establishing new crops (distribution of farm inputs and equipment);

•             Restore the water supply lines through construction and rehabilitation of boreholes and wells.

•             Adopt gabions to limit the impact of flooding and erosion on crop fields.

•             See below, photos captured during the assessments. The full reports can be found in annexure.

•             The actual project baseline was planned for June 2021

The NODO organization conducted baseline evaluation was planned for 27th June to 6th July of 2021. Through facilitation from the donor, 6 enumerators were on boarded and carried out the data collection.  The baseline assessment had targeted 68 HHs in Cell-Dahir and 38 HHs in Laag.  The baseline was intended at measuring and reporting on the current statuses of critical project indicators that would then act to inform the strategy of activity implementation. The data was submitted to DF. We anticipate reading through the baseline findings to learn and adapt our activities to priority response areas and needs.
